Temperatures reached the high-’70s Thursday afternoon, supplying my already-glowing face (’twas a fantastic week) with some well-needed rays of sunlight. In a world where your seemingly gray day can automatically turn sunshine yellow without the weatherman’s blessing, choosing to wear an outfit reflecting your own chameleon-like nature defeats those unpredictable situations.
I remember a girl in fifth grade named Erica (actually, I think it was spelled “Erika”) who always bragged about owning a Tommy Hilfiger watch. With my stubborn need to defeat any other person who thought they were “all that and a bag of Fritos,” as I used to say (and, thankfully, say no more), I asked my mother to buy me a lovely denim Tommy Hilfiger button-up shirt. Thankfully, she acquiesced when it went on sale, and when Erika saw me wearing my cool blue Tommy shirt (no, it wasn’t just a regular blue, it was a cool blue), she practically fell to the floor. Too bad her watch didn’t break when I imagined her falling down in my mind…(I was pretty horrible back then – I’ve matured quite a bit).
Anyway, when I read the forecast for Thursday, I wanted to wear something that said “look at me, but don’t stare at me.” Erika might have stared pretty hard, and passerby nowadays might have too if they knew I could still fit in a shirt I wore about 10 years ago. It’s mostly because I was a pretty chubby kid back in the day, to be honest. This shirt just proves that style never fades, kind of like the statue I posed with on The University of Texas’ campus. Although the goddess-like figure lacked any form of identification, I had a feeling she’s stood there for quite some time (which is probably the reason why she’s serving some major legs and arms). If only I can remain in a tricep-busting, thigh-tigtheting pose, I could definitely make Erika and her watch stop in their tracks…but that’s the past and besides the point. Clearly.
